How the map is made

SD Cafes started as a list on a phone. It turned into this because every other list of San Diego coffee shops was either a chain-heavy search result or five adjectives under a stock photo. Neither tells you what to order or whether you can sit for two hours with a laptop.

So each of the 213 cafes here gets the same treatment. We visit or verify against the shop's own pages, read the menus, check the hours, note the outlets and the parking, and pull in what regulars consistently say. Owners can correct anything. The write-up says who roasts the coffee, what the room feels like, and what to order first.

Listings are picked by hand and lean local. Small San Diego brands with a few locations, like Better Buzz or Dark Horse, are in, and so are a few coffee-first names from out of town. Cafes can claim their page for free, and featured spots are available for shops that want more visibility.

The map covers 24 areas today, from Encinitas down to Chula Vista and out to Santee, and it keeps growing as fast as we can drink our way there.
